نظريات تفسير حدوث ظاهرة الأحلام:

يقول العالم سيجموند فرويد أنّ الأحلام هي وسيلة تلجأ إليها النفس لإشباع رغباتها ودوافعها المكبوتة خاصة التي يكون إشباعها صعب ومستحيل في الواقع، ونتيجة لتفكيره المستمر في رغباته يتأثر*العقل الباطن بهذا الأمر وأثناء نومه يرى دوافعه قد تحققت في صورة حدث أو موقف.
يقول ألفرد أدلر وهو أحد طلاب فرويد أن للحلم وظيفة توقعية يقوم من خلاله النائم التنبؤ بما يمكن أن يحدث معه في حياته ومستقبله.
أمّا كارل يونغ يرى أن الحلم يحدث كناتج عن نشاطات اللاوعي، حيث أن الأحلام تقدم بعض الحلول للمشكلات التي تواجه الشخص في محاولة لإعادة التوازن إلى الشخصية.
يرى البعض أنّ العوامل البدنية تؤثر على روح الإنسان وتفكيره، مثلاً لو أكل الإنسان*أنواعاً مختلفة من الطعام ثم ذهب إلى النوم مباشرة فسوف يحلم بعدة أحلام مختلفة، وبذلك تكون الأحلام عبارة عن أوهام لا اعتبار لها في الواقع.
أما في الدين الإسلامي فقد قسّم*رسول الله محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم الأحلام (https://www.last.fm/user/Buraydah) إلى ثلاثة أنواع، الرؤيا هي مشاهدة النائم حلم جميل وهي من الله وتدلّ على بشرة خير أو تحذير من مكروه، النوع الثاني الحلم الذي يرى به النائم أمراً مكروه ومحزن وهو من الشيطان، أما النوع الثالث فهي أضغاث الأحلام وهي عبارة عن رغبات ومخاوف مكبوتة في العقل الباطن.
